Zora Neale Hurston

Another one of Boas' famous students, Hurston is most well-known for her focus on race. More specifically, Hurston focused her anthropological studies on African Americans, who were often ignored in the field of anthropology. Hurston grew up in Florida with very little and had a pretty tough life. She dedicated her studies to African American culture, tradition, and folklore. Hurston advocated for the importance of African American culture, as well as the need for anthropologist to broaden their studies from just white people to include all cultures. Though she went most of her life relatively unknown, Hurston is now a highly regarded author, known for her novel "There Eyes Were Watching God".
